Looming behind the famous Machu Picchu ruins there is a jagged, steep mountain peak. That peak is called “Wayna Picchu” and it is home to a world famous hike. Only 400 permits are issued per day to have access to that hike.
We at Destination Peru highly recommend making the preparations to do that hike, it is amazing.
Now, if you enjoyed the Wayna Picchu hike, and you have a couple of hours to burn, then the adventure can continue! Instead of turning around at the top of Wayna Picchu and hiking back down the way you came, you can continue on to visit the Temple of the Moon.
Simply go down the backside of Wayna Picchu (the trail is well marked and contains multiple signs pointing you in the right direction) and enjoy a little-used trail through the jungles of Machu Picchu. You will be led to a cave, full of and surrounded by Incan ruins.
Please only attempt this hike if you are in good shape and don’t mind hiking for an extra two hours.
